Parts of a hammer

The hammer is a basic tool for anyone carrying out woodworking plans. You just can't do without hammers in the basic kit. Whether you are an expert or not, the hammer is an essential tool in any home. It is extremely useful for an infinite number of tasks. The hammer is a device that consists of the following parts:

• A handle, usually wood.
• A head of iron or steel

As we all know, the main use of hammers is to hit another piece, such as nails, for sticking them into the wood. But it is not the only use of a hammer, which is, in fact, mainly related to one’s creativity in the job you do. Some tips for the proper use of a hammer.

A good quality hammer is tough and durable, its head has been heat treated to give it the proper hardness, and the handle is made of straight grained hickory, specially chosen and cut to provide the right balance.

Care of the hammer

For your own safety and that of those around you, never use a hammer with loose head. Put new wedges or install a handle again. When the tool is not in use, keep your head oiled to prevent rust. Remove the oil before using.
Know your tack hammer. When using a tack hammer to regular five-ounce tacks, one saddler, 7 ounces, or one 8-ounce billsticker.

The handles are given a way to provide some degree of elasticity to absorb shock and relieve tension in muscles using the hammer. The handles are flared at the lower ends yen some cases are equipped with rubber end-pieces to allow easy grip that will not cause fatigue. Some hammers have handles made of steel, forged in one piece with the head and lined with leather rolling discs, to form a comfortable grip to cushion the shock caused by the impact.

Tips for proper hammer use

* Always be sure to select the hammer that better suits the job you are planning.
* Do not hit the nail with the side of the hammer head.
* When the handle goes off permanently, a quick solution may be wetting it: when you sink it in the water, the wood expands and will not let the hammer out again. When it loses the moisture, it will go off again, so the permanent solution is a wedge. This example teaches us about the property of wood of expansion and contraction. Remember: the point when humidity of the wood stables depends on the point of hydrostatic balance.
* In case the hammer slips off your nails, you will probably need to roughen the surface of the head using a dogfish or any abrassive substance.

Types of Hammers

We will find many types of hammer, as the carpenter’s drumstick, with a wooden head, which is used commonly for hitting pieces you want to assemble in a fine work. A variety of this can be found in the maces with nylon head, though for a more mechanical use. We must not forget the classical carpenter’s hammer which, on the opposite side of the handle, it has an ear-like shape that works as a lever for nail extraction. Finally, we can also distinguish the hammer with a wedge side, useful when you want to hit non accessible pieces. For a better selection, we can also find these: Peins Cross and straight peins are fine tools.

Their main use is for shaping metals. The pein can be at right angles to the handle or parallel with it. For domestic use, you will probably prefer the cross pein. You can also find the ball pein, generally used by engineers, it has a round shape and its main use is for hitting metals. Ball pein hammers are available from 55 - 1100 (4 oz up to 2 lb.), 110 - 165g (8oz 12oz). Sledge Hammer They weigh usually between 7 and 14 lb, being used for the heaviest jobs in wood working and construction. Power hammers: Also known as the powered nailers, they are ideal when you need to fix a great quantity of nails. Special hammers Club hammers –also referred to as Lump hammer- / Soft face hammer / joiner’s mallet.

:The sledge hammer

This hammer is feasible to work with small nails, is thin, light and narrow. Its use is not suitable for finger banging when subjected small tips. It is a square-headed tool. This type of hammer is usually made of wood, nylon or rubber. It is used for delivering blows to certain surfaces without damaging or leaving marks.

There are other hammers which are heavier, have between 2 to 3 kilos; these hammer handles are long, and are primarily used to demolish brick walls or walls made of other type of material.

Special hammers

Hammers for shoemaker and leather workers. Soft materials such as nails, spikes and studs who have to kneel on them, have produced very specific forms of the hammer.

Jeweler's hammer and chisel. The irregular shape of the handle is the most notable of this tool. Just each artisan can shape it to their discretion.

The hammers are usually classified by the weight of your head. This weight in direct relation to the impact caused, should determine the strength and effectiveness for each type of work.

Mechanical Hammers:

This article shows three types of mechanical hammers, and various types of hammers heavier than adapting to fold or sheet metal rivets to make chisels and for other similar jobs. Note that riveting hammers shown in the upper left detail Cotillos include both spherical (ball) as gossips wedge (cross or straight), allowing them to hammer rivets and metal surfaces.
