Saws and Handsaws
The main use of these tools is for cutting the wood, but we must differentiate them carefully. The saw is a steel sheet provided of triangular teeth in a zig zag shape. On the opposite side it has a rib which is the piece used for giving stregth to the sheet and thus more precision. Otherwise, the sheet will tend to bend itself with the pressure you make. This will allow you also to make a deeper cut.
The handsaw has a triangular steel part and the teeth are slightly more separated, which influences on the precision: it will be less than the saw but we cannot deny that the work is done quicker with this tool.

Tips for a safe use of the handsaw
* Alway s remember that a fine cut depends on the steadiness of the hand.
* You will need a good measure, marking the wood and defining a line for the cut with a pencil. If you lose this line in the middle of the job stop sawing and remove the sawdust.
* Clamp the wood tightly to a sawhorse.
* Beware with the edge, mostly for your fingers and your leg.
* Point the saw slightly down, keep the grip firmly. Start the job.
* Always be concentrated when using a saw, try avoiding television and talking. Do your job but nothing more.
If you work with electric hand saws protect your eyes with proper sunglasses. A mask is also useful, especially with some species of wood. The saws are cutting tools and therefore have to be handled with care. As for chain saws, and although its use is simple and its high security, we must not ever lose respect because when least expected the saw can give you a good scare. You must read the instructions carefully and you will firmly hold the machine when we are sawing. To change the blade or disc, or to carry out cleaning, always unplug the machine. Finally, we should not forget the security measures common to all electrical devices (do not put them near sources of moisture or heat, do not pull the cable, etc).
TYPES OF SAWS
UNIVERSAL SAW. The universal saw blade consists of a long flexible metal full of cutting teeth and a handle to grasp it fully. Although the blade is flexible, because of its great width, is indicated for straight cuts. There are specialized saws for cutting logs, solid wood cutting boards or cutting manufactured. The latter have a finer teeth to allow a clean cut.
Cross cut saw. This saw is characterized by its narrow blade and is suitable for curved and straight cuts, and also to domestic courts. That is, when we want to cut a piece of a board inside this saw will be of much use.
Rip cut saw. Rib saws are used for precision cutting. The bl ade is usually thinner than in previous ones, and they do not flex, it gives it a superior reinforcement (rib) so that the cut will be perfectly straight. It is widely used for miter strips, moldings and baseboards bars, helping a miter box (pictured right).
Fret saws and coping saws
They consist of a metal arc that maintain tight handle a saw blade thin. The arch is there of varying shapes and depths. Saw blades hacksaw blades or they are of different thicknesses and shapes, for cutting straight and curved cuts more or less pronounced. Due to the narrowness of the blade can be sharpened, and must be changed every time they dull or break. They are widely used for cutting narrow boards complicated, usually plywood.
Metal saws
The veneer saw is used with the metal ruler for straight cutting of veneer. It has a blade with teeth on both edges without tease. In this case it is necessary for tooth set of teeth is not cutting deep (just a millimeter).
The metal saws and bows have a much finer teeth for the cutting of them. The court may take in moving outward or the return, depending on the placement of the saw blade. There is also a handle to gain access to difficult places. In summary, metal saw is a very useful tool for any handyman because it also cuts plastics and in some cases can be used to cut wood. |
